Squabbalogic artistic director Jay James-Moody directs the production that runs through Nov. 30 at the Seymour Centre. The Squabbalogic also presented Forbidden Broadway and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson this season.
Margi de Ferranti (Mamma Mia!, Les Misérables) stars as Margaret White, with Hilary Cole taking on the title role of the teen with telekinetic powers. Also featured in the cast are Adèle Parkinson (Legally Blonde), Garry Scale (Hairspray, Fat Swan), Monique Sallé (A Chorus Line), Tim Dal Cortivo, Toby Francis, Prudence Holloway, Jaimie Leigh Johnson, Rob Johnson, Andy Johnston, Bridget Keating, Garry Scale, Zach Smith and Maryann Wright.
The staging reflects the new book and score, which were updated for MCC Theater's 2012 Off-Broadway production. The original writing team of Academy Award-winning composer Michael Gore ("Fame," "Terms of Endearment"), Academy Award-winning lyricist Dean Pitchford ("Fame," "Footloose") and "Carrie" film screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen returned to work on Carrie, which now features additional songs and emphasizes the effects of teen bullying and school politics.
The musical centers on the tale of a tormented high school teenager, Carrie White, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. The young girl must cope with a fanatically religious mother and her own coming of age. When her friends push her too far on prom night, they find out how destructive bullying can be.
The Australian premiere has musical direction by Bev Kennedy and choreography by Shondelle Pratt.
