Film & TV News Cynthia Erivo Will Play Harriet Tubman in New Film Harriet The Tony-winning actor is also at work on the new thriller, Widows.

Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, who will perform on the upcoming Grammy Awards telecast, has been cast as abolitionist Harriet Tubman in a forthcoming film about the late Civil Rights activist, according to Deadline.com.

Entitled Harriet, the new motion picture from Macro/New Balloon will be directed by Seith Mann with a screenplay by Gregory Allen Howard. No timeline has been announced for the film, which chronicles the life of the American hero who helped hundreds escape slavery via the Underground Railroad. Tubman, who died in 1913, also fought for women’s right to vote.

Erivo, a Tony winner for her performance in the revival of The Color Purple, is also at work on a new thriller, Widows, directed by Steven McQueen and co-starring Tony winner Viola Davis.
