Making its debut in concert at The Public Theater, Jaime Lozano and Florencia Cuenca's Desaparecidas plays March 28 at 7 PM ET at Joe’s Pub.
Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent, In the Heights), Aline Mayagoitia (Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation), Latin Grammy nominee Sonia de los Santos, Majo Rivero, and Florencia Cuenca star in the performance.
The show features an all-female cast and band celebrating the lives of individual women in México while illuminating the systematic oppression of women in the fight to end gender-based violence. Desaparecidas investigates the challenge of honoring cultural customs while fighting for autonomy in a dangerous world of machismo through a look at the killing of women and girls in Ciudad Juárez, México.
Lozano and Cuenca developed the musical as part of their work in the 2020-2021 cohort of The Civilians' R&D Group. The Civilians is an investigative theatre company based in Brooklyn which commissions and fosters work, particularly musicals, that are based in research delving into real-life experiences such as Lucas Hnath's Dana H. which was directed by The Civilians' Artistic Director Steve Cosson. Desaparecidas was also developed in an artist residency at JACK the same year.
