Broadway's Davis Gaines is scheduled to perform a program of pop songs and show tunes Feb. 24-Mar. 1 at L.A.'s Cinegrill.

Gaines has played the title role in The Phantom of the Opera more times than any other performer including role originator Michael Crawford.(Over a five-year period Gaines gave a total of 1,937 performances as the Phantom on Broadway and in L.A. and San Francisco.)

Audiences can expect to hear a healthy dose of songs from Gaines' debut solo album, "Against the Tide" (released in 1997 by LAP Records), which contains original pop songs, classic standards and songs from such Broadway shows as Anyone Can Whistle, Chess, South Pacific, Show Boat and Phantom.

Gaines is no stranger to the world of cabaret. He first performed at the Cinegrill in 1996 and last summer headlined at New York's Rainbow & Stars nightclub in the legendary Rainbow Room.

Prior to that, he starred in the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Jim Steinman musical Whistle Down the Wind, which began and ended its run in last season at the National Theatre in Washington, DC.(The musical, which has been revamped, is set to have a second life this summer; it opens July 1 in London.) Gaines was also featured in the New York City Center "Encores!" production of The Boys from Syracuse in the spring of 1997 (which was recorded for DRG Records); he also played Bobby in Boston in the Huntington Theatre's recent production of Stephen Sondheim's Company.

Gaines, a native of Florida, currently resides in L.A.

The Cinegrill is at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel , 7000 Hollywood Blvd. Show times are Tue-Thu. at 8 PM, Fri. and Sat. at 8 PM and 10:30 PM and Sun. at 7 PM and 9 PM. There is a $20 cover charge Tue.-Thu. and a $25 cover charge Fri.-Sun. (and a two-drink minimum at all shows). For reservations, call (213) 769-7273.
