LOS ANGELES -- School groups have been snapping up tickets for the Los Angeles show, Harriet's Return, featuring Debbie Allen as Harriet Tubman. So great is the demand, before the show even opened (Feb. 4), the run was extended past its March 1 close to March 7, with most of the new dates matinee performances.

Harriet's Return, by Karen Jones Meadows, receives its West Coast premiere at the Geffen Playhouse. Previews started Jan. 27. Directed by Kent Gash, Harriet's Return chronicles the life of a black woman whose courage in running the Underground Railroad forever changed a nation.

"Debbie Allen and I have worked together for many years, yet this is our first theatre venture together," said producing director Gilbert Cates. "Debbie brings her special blend of talent, passion and commitment to Harriet's Return and I am thrilled to have her here at the Geffen Playhouse."

Allen is one of the producers of the Steven Spielberg film Amistad. As a performer she appeared in several Broadway musicals including the revivals of West Side Story and Sweet Charity (and received Tony nominations for both roles).

The cast also features Seraiah Carol Kyme, Thomas Corey Robinson and Stephen Smith. The Geffen Playhouse is at 10886 Le Conte Ave. in Westwood. For tickets, call (310) 208-5454 or 1-800-678-5440.
