When National Dance Week kicks off April 22-30, 2000, choreographer Debbie Allen will lead it as the national spokesperson. Allen choreographed 1999's Academy Awards, as well as the cult Broadway flop, Carrie. As an actress, she won a 1980 Tony Award as best featured actress in the revival of West Side Story, played Charity in the 1986 revival of Sweet Charity and had roles in Guys and Dolls and Purlie.

Past dance spokespersons have included Gregory Hines, Paula Abdul and Ann Reinking. 1999's spokersperson was film actress Shirley MacLaine.
