Desmond Richardson, the acclaimed ballet and modern dance star who dazzled audiences in Fosse when it opened in January 1999, returns to the role that earned him a Tony Award nomination, June 27-July 9.
The Broadway musical took home the Best Musical Tony Award in 1999. At the Broadhurst Theatre, Stephanie Pope stars as the sexy, slinky tour guide through the conceptual revue of dances and numbers created by late director-choreographer Bob Fosse. She is joined by 32 dancers.
A highlight of Richardson's performance in 1999 was "Percussion 4," a muscular, strenuous dance piece to the sound of, as the title suggests, percussion. He also danced The Spirit character in the show's "Mr. Bojangles" section. Richardson has been a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Frankfurt Ballet. This summer, he plays a featured role in the Patrick Swayze film, "Without a Word."
Ann Reinking co-directed Fosse with Richard Maltby Jr. She co choreographed it with Chet Walker; Walker has "choreography recreated by" credit. Gwen Verdon, Fosse's wife and longtime artistic collaborator, is the show's artistic advisor.
Fosse also won Tonys for Best Lighting and Best Orchestrations. For ticket information, call (212) 239-6200.
