Paulus has been developing the musical for the past several years and staged Witness Uganda at the American Repertory Theater, where she is artistic director, earlier this year. Several members of the A.R.T. cast will return for the readings.

Witness Uganda is based on the real experiences of its authors Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews.

The cast will feature Julius Thomas III, Adeola Role, Adam Kantor, Michael Luwoye, Kristolyn Lloyd, Nicolette Robinson, Jamar Williams, Tyrone Davis, Amber Iman, Aisha Jackson, LaTrisa Harper, Roderick Covington, Kevin Curtis and Jamard Richardson.

The actors announced for the readings do not necessarily reflect casting for future productions of the musical.

Here's how A.R.T. characterized the musical: "When Griffin, a young man from New York City volunteers for a project in Uganda, he finds himself on a journey that will change his life forever. Inspired by a true story, this rousing new musical exposes the challenges confronted by American aid workers around the world and explores the question: 'Is changing the world possible?'"
