News Diner Musical, Still On a Broadway Track, Will Not Play San Francisco This Fall Producers of the new Sheryl Crow-Barry Levinson musical Diner, based on the 1982 film, are expected to postpone their fall tryout at San Francisco's Curran Theatre, but the show remains on a path toward a spring 2013 Broadway bow, Playbill.com has learned.

The world premiere won't happen at the Curran Oct. 23-Nov. 18. An official announcement about the show's life is expected shortly.

As previously reported, Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall will direct and choreograph the production, which features a book by Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Levinson, who directed and wrote the screenplay for the original film, and music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Crow. The musical will mark the Broadway debuts of both Levinson and Crow.

Design team and casting will be announced at a later date.

Diner, according to production notes, is set in "Baltimore, 1959, when six high school friends reunite at the one place they know they'll always belong: the Diner. Now in their twenties, the friends have stumbled into adulthood and struggle to keep from growing apart. Life, love, responsibility — it's all on the table."

Given Crow's knack for humane lyrics and fetching melodies, and considering the tender ensemble chemistry of the film, the musical would seem to be an heir to the small, heartbreaking and sweetly comic musical, Once, the 2012 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, which is also based on a popular film. Diner is produced by BASE Entertainment (co-CEOs Scott Zeiger and Brian Becker).

Sheryl Crow has sold more than 35 million records worldwide including the singles "Soak Up the Sun," "First Cut is the Deepest," "If It Makes You Happy," "Every Day Is A Winding Road," "All I Wanna Do," "Strong Enough," "Leaving Las Vegas" and "“Steve McQueen."

Levinson's films include "Rain Man," "Good Morning Vietnam," "Bugsy," "Tin Men," "The Natural," "Young Sherlock Holmes," "Toys," "Disclosure," "Sleepers," "Wag the Dog" and "Avalon."

"Diner" launched Levinson's film directing career. It was his screen directing debut. He received an Academy Award nomination for his original screenplay. He later won the Oscar for his direction of "Rain Man." The period comedy starred Kevin Bacon, Ellen Barkin, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Paul Reiser, Mickey Rourke and Daniel Stern.
