Donald Margulies' Dinner with Friends has been awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it was announced April 10 at Columbia University's School of Journalism. An Off-Broadway hit at the Variety Arts Theatre, Dinner with Friends concerns two couples: one going through a messy divorce and their best friends, who are rocked by their friends' break-up. Margulies' Collected Stories was previously considered for a Pulitzer.
Other nominees for the prize were Suzan-Lori Parks' In the Blood and August Wilson's King Hedley II.
Last year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama went to Margaret Edson's Wit. At that time, Edson's play about a terminally ill scholar was considered a clear front runner.
The Pulitzer Prize has been offered annually since 1917 for a "distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life." All of the works that have been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Drama are listed below.
