Alex Petti and Annie Pulsipher's The Trouble with Dead Boyfriends will be workshopped through the Discovering Broadway Writer's Retreat. The gory feminist musical following three monster-loving teens will be developed during the November 1-5 retreat before receiving a concert presentation in April, 2024.
Featuring a book and lyrics by Annie Pulsipher and music and lyrics by Alex Petti, the musical centers on three best friends—Stella, Grace, and Madison—who are searching for the perfect dates to Senior Prom. Obsessed with monsters, the three girls summon their dream dates, even though they're a little...dead. But when things take a turn for the worse as their dates reveal themselves to be monstrous, will the girls—and their friendship—survive?
The Trouble with Dead Boyfriends was previously workshopped and developed at Carnegie Mellon's Playground Festival and Berklee College of Music. It was also presented at the Premiere Premieres! Festival in Chicago in 2017 and SheNYC Festival in New York in 2018, and received awards from both presentations. Most recently, it ran Off-Broadway at the Players Theatre last summer.
Joel Kirk will direct the show throughout its Broadway Writer's Retreat development. The Trouble with Dead Boyfriends marks the sixth musical to be developed through the retreat.
Following its development at the Broadway Writer's Retreat, the musical will be presented in Indianapolis, Indiana at The Toby on April 20, 2024 at 5 PM and 8 PM. Tickets will be available at the end of the month.
