As with all Disney's animated musicals of the past decade, The Hunchback of Notre Dame features a wealth of theatre talent.Tom Hulce (Equus) does the voice of Quasimodo; Kevin Kline (On the Twentieth Century) plays Phoebus, the captain of the guards. In supporting roles are Charles Kimbrough (Sunday in the Park With George), Jason Alexander (Jerome Robbins' Broadway) and David Ogden Stiers (The Magic Show). Demi Moore does the voice of Esmerelda and Tony Jay plays Minister of Justice Frollo.
Like 1995's Pocahontas, Hunchback has music by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, The Baker's Wife).
Based on Victor Hugo's novel about a misshappen man with a beautiful soul who yearns for the world beyond his belltower and falls in love with a beautiful gypsy girl, the film is directed by Kirk Wise and Garry Trousdale. Hugo's novel, Les Miserables was the source for the long-running stage musical.
