Disney’s Newsies Now Available for Amateur Licensing | Playbill

Industry News Disney’s Newsies Now Available for Amateur Licensing The hit Broadway stage adaptation of the 1992 film is now available for licensing to schools and community theatre groups.

Schools and community theatre across the country can now apply for the amateur rights to Disney's Newsies through Music Theatre International. Based on the 1992 motion picture, Newsies features a Tony-Award winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.

The stage version introduces seven new songs from Menken and Feldman, including a song written specifically for the tour, “Letter from the Refuge,” while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”

To celebrate the release of Newises for amateur licensing, Playbill teamed up with Disney Theatrical Group and Music Theatre International to create the Seize the Day Challenge, a global community service campaign. Forty-three schools and community theatre organizations from around the country submitted videos via Twitter showcasing their grassroots service projects. In the end, over 2 million votes were cast for five finalists, with Premier Arts ultimately the winner. As the winner of the Seize the Day Challenge, Premier Arts will receive Dramatic stage rights and standard rental package for Newsies via Music Theatre International, a free PLAYBILLder for their production and more.

Newsies was inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful New York newspaper publishers.
