CHICAGO -- Light Opera Works, the 17-year-old, Evanston-based company that bills itself as "Illinois' Music Theatre," has announced a new season with a rare discovery. Along with such staples as Gilbert and Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard, Sigmund Romberg's The Desert Song and Jones & Schmidt's The Fantasticks, in late August Light Opera Works premieres the first American staging of Emmerich Kalman's The Duchess of Chicago. Offering the Windy City its own eponymous Viennese operetta, this 1928 Hungarian confection tells how the daughter of a Chicago millionaire, who hates the waltz, falls in love with a Viennese prince, who hates the Charleston.
