The work has been hovering on the Off-Broadway radar for a couple seasons now. Most recently, producers were planning a spring or summer 2005 berth, with Cady Huffman and Tom Wopat heading the cast. It is unclear whether those actors are connected to the project any longer; Wopat is part of the current Broadway mounting of Glengarry Glen Ross. Adrift in Macao played Vassar College's Powerhouse Theatre as part of New York Stage & Film's 2002 summer season. Producers Susan Dietz and Ina Meibach are behind the production, a musical send-up of film noir. Sheryl Kaller, who directed in 2002, is expected to repeat her duties. Musical director is Fred Lassen, according to Theatrical Index. Tom Lynch is providing sets.

The story takes place at the "Casablanca"-esque Macao Surf and Turf Nightclub Gambling Casino, which is overseen by one Rick Shaw. There, sex, blackmail, danger and romance transpire.

Durang last had a new work on the New York stage with Playwrights Horizons' premiere of his scathing comedy, Betty Summer's Vacation, arguably the biggest critical hit of his career. Though there was interest in a commercial transfer of the show, it closed after an extended run at PH. If Macao happens, it will be Durang's second show of the 2005-06 season. His Miss Witherspoon will be produced at Playwrights Horizons this November.
