News Eddie Redmayne Transforms Into Transgender Pioneer in "Danish Girl," Opening Today Eddie Redmayne, who took home an Oscar this past spring for his leading performance in "The Theory of Everything," portrays transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in "The Danish Girl." Directed by Tom Hooper, the film opens Nov. 27.

Born in Denmark in 1882 as Einar Wegener, Elbe underwent one of the first sex reassignment surgery operations after living as a woman for a number of years. The film co-stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Alicia Vikander and Amber Heard.

Redmayne won the 2010 Tony Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in Red. Among his stage roles since then, he played the title role in a U.K. production of Richard II.
