Ticket sales at the Edinburgh Festival are breaking box-office records. With Monday's box office takings confirmed as being a record £58,000 and advance ticket sales £250,000 up on the same time last year, the Edinburgh Fringe is clearly on peak form at the moment.
According to Fringe director Paul Gudgin, "It's been an electrifying start to this year's Fringe, with record audiences enjoying the best in live performance", while Bill Burdett-Coutts, the director of the Assembly Rooms, one of the largest and most established venues, expressed pleasure in the fact that large numbers of people were enjoying a wide variety of shows, and clearly deciding to experiment with performances they would not normally go to see.
All the signs are that Edinburgh is more than living up to its position as Europe's premier arts festival.
