LOS ANGELES -- The death of Edith Bernauer, 90, mother of actress Evelyn Rudie and mother-in-law of director Chris DeCarlo, was announced today by the Santa Monica Playhouse, where Bernauer served for many years as 'Party Lady' and box office manager. Her late husband, Emery Bernauer, was a prominent writer-director.

She died on New Year's eve after a brief illness.

Known to patrons of the Playhouse as "Bridget the Box Office Monster," Bernauer changed her name from Edith to Bridget when she turned 80, saying "I've hated the name Edith all my life. I think I'm old enough now to change it."

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edith & Emery Bernauer Memorial Scholarship Fund at Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 4th St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
