The Alpert Award in the Arts is an unrestricted prize of $75,000 given annually to five "risk-taking mid-career artists working in the fields of dance, film/video, music, theatre and the visual arts." Other recipients of the award are Nora Chipaumire for Dance, Kevin Everson for Film/Video, Myra Melford for Music and Michael Smith for Visual Arts. The honorees receive their awards May 11 at the Herb Alpert Foundation in Santa Monica.
Davis, who was seen on Broadway in Passing Strange, was featured in the West Coast run of Melissa James Gibson’s This. As a playwright, she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Bulrusher. She wrote and starred in Angela's Mixtape, and her other plays include Ramp, The History of Light, Paper Armor, Umkovu, Six Minutes, Warriors Don't Cry and the collaborations Active Ingredients and Hip Hop Anansi. Davis is developing a music-theatre piece entitled Flowers Are Sleeping, which is scheduled to premiere in 2013 at New York's Symphony Space. Visit Davis' page at the Playbill Vault.
