News Ellen Stewart Award-Winning Drama So Go the Ghosts of Mexico, Part One Sets Cast for La MaMa Premiere Casting has been announced for the La MaMa world premiere of Matthew Paul Olmos' so go the ghosts of mexico, part one, the Ellen Stewart Award-winning work that marks the first drama in his trilogy of plays about the U.S.-Mexican drug wars.

Olmos' play is the culmination of a commission from La MaMa. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Sam Shepard selected the young playwright to pen a new work that would debut this season at the downtown experimental venue.

Meiyin Wang will stage the production that begins previews April 11 towards an April 14 opening night. Performances are scheduled through April 28.

The cast features Laura Butler Rivera, Bernardo Cubria, Jose Joaquin Perez, Luis Moreno and Peter O'Connor.

The first play is inspired by the story of Marisol Valles Garcia, who in her early twenties became the police chief of a violent border town between the U.S. and Mexico. She has since fled to the U.S.

According to LaMaMa, "In an un-named Mexican border town, a 22 year-old woman volunteers to replace a beheaded police chief when no one else will take the job. Soon, a strange sound envelops the city and a chain reaction is triggered in her home, the cartels and possibly the entire country of Mexico. In his New York debut, Olmos calculates the cost of courage in this dark and irreverent re-imagining of true events." The production has lighting design by Jeanette Yew, set design by Nick Benacerraf, costume design by Alice Tavener and sound design by Elizabeth Rhodes.

Olmos is also a Sundance Institute Time Warner Storytelling Fellow, a two-time resident artist at Mabou Mines/Suite, an EST lifetime member, a BAX resident artist, and a “Top prize for the Americas” awardee by the BBC 2011 International Playwriting Competition. His works also include i put the fear of mexico in 'em and Monkey. Olmos is the co-founder and former artistic director of woken'glacier theatre company. He is the 2012 Princess Grace Fellow in Playwriting, a 2013 Sundance Institute Ucross Playwright and a 2012-13 New York Theatre Workshop fellow.
