The baby boy was born via a surrogate and weighed seven pounds, 15 ounces.

John and Furnish had previously tried unsuccessfully to adopt an HIV-positive child from the Ukraine in 2009; they made a commitment to provide financial support to the boy and his brother after their adoption proposal was rejected due to the Ukraine's not recognizing civil marriages and concerns over John's age.

John, a legendary singer-songwriter, won a Tony Award for his score for Aida and an additional nomination for his work on Billy Elliot. John and Furnish both served as producers on last season's Broadway run of the Tony-nominated play Next Fall.
