The Emerson String Quartet makes a special appearance tonight at 7 p.m. at the Apple Store Soho in lower Manhattan. The free event will feature a combination of performance and conversation, with the four musicians leading the audience through a brief history of the string quartet.

An MP3 download of a similar program, titled "The String Quartet Revealed," is now available exclusively at iTunes; each of the three volumes covers a period in the medium's history: Classical, Romantic and Modern.

This is a milestone year for the Emerson Quartet: the foursome is celebrating 30 years together and 20 years of recording for DG. The group is currently in the midst of its Perspectives series of concerts at Carnegie Hall, focusing on the Beethoven quartets.
