"Eminem Meets Sweeney Todd," "Alicia Keys Meets Elphaba" – Must-Read Hamilton Casting Breakdowns! | Playbill

News "Eminem Meets Sweeney Todd," "Alicia Keys Meets Elphaba" – Must-Read Hamilton Casting Breakdowns! Lin-Manuel Miranda is having some fun with the casting breakdowns for his hot new musical Hamilton, which arrives on Broadway in July after a critically-acclaimed run at the Public Theater that continues through May 3.

Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs, Jill Furman and The Public Theater are producing the Broadway run that will begin July 13 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. While it is expected that the entire Off-Broadway cast will reprise their performances on Broadway, producers are still required to hold Equity Principal Auditions.

Miranda's character breakdowns for Hamilton, like the musical itself, are a creative mash-up of pop culture and classic references that range from Harold Hill to Drake and Desiree Armfeldt to Nicki Minaj.

The author and star describes the tile character (which he also plays) as "Eminem Meets Sweeney Todd," while Eliza Hamilton (played by Phillipa Soo) is described as "Alicia Keys meets Elphaba." His ally and later political nemesis Aaron Burr (played by Leslie Odom Jr.) is conceived as "Javert meets Mos Def."

Hamilton began Off-Broadway previews Jan. 20 and opened to critical acclaim Feb. 17. The new musical reunites the award-winning In the Heights team. Tony nominee Thomas Kail is at the helm, with choreography from Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler. Miranda, who wrote the show's book, music and lyrics, stars in the title role.

Read the Playbill magazine feature with Miranda and Leslie Odom, Jr., who co-star as the show's respective fatal friends, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

Inspired by the book "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, the musical incorporates historical figures such as George Washington, Aaron Burr, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. Miranda previously performed a song from Hamilton for President Obama and the First Family at the White House in 2009.
