In late April, the Daily News reported that Stone ("Easy A," "The Help") was in negotiations to star in a revival of the Tony Award-winning musical opposite Alan Cumming as the Master of Ceremonies.
Cumming earned a Tony Award for playing the role in the 1998 revival of Cabaret. Composer John Kander previously confirmed Cumming's casting in a 2014 remounting for the Roundabout Theatre Company.
The Times reports that while Stone will not be involved due to committments for a film project, Tony and Academy Award winners Sam Mendes (Gypsy, "American Beauty") and Rob Marshall ("Chicago," Kiss of the Spider Woman) will repeat their work as director and co-director/choreographer, respectively. The two earned acclaim for the 1998 revival for the Roundabout.
Representatives for the Roundabout could not confirm details of the revival, or Mendes and Marshall's attachment to Playbill.com. The Roundabout Theatre Company, which produced the last revival (featuring Cumming) at Studio 54, has not announced its full 2013-14 season.
Cabaret features a book by Joe Masteroff, based on the John Van Druten play "I Am a Camera" and the original stories by Christopher Isherwood. John Kander and Fred Ebb penned the Tony-Award winning score to the musical that features such hits as "Willkommen," "So What," "Don't Tell Mama" and the title song.
Cabaret premiered on Broadway in 1966 under the direction of Harold Prince. The original production starred Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies. Cumming starred opposite late actress Natasha Richardson in the acclaimed 1998 Sam Mendes-helmed revival of the production for the Roundabout Theatre, which ran for 2,414 performances. Liza Minnelli and Grey starred in Bob Fosse's Oscar-winning 1972 film adaptation.
