News Enchanted April to Close on Broadway Aug. 31 Matthew Barber's light romantic comedy, Enchanted April — featuring a Tony-nominated turn by Jayne Atkinson — will end its run at the Belasco Theatre next month.

Variety reports that the Tony-nominated play will close Aug. 31, having played 24 previews and 144 regular performances. When it ends its acclaimed run, only one non-musical production will be left on Broadway, Richard Greenberg's Tony-winning Take Me Out. Enchanted April lost the Tony for Best Play to Greenberg's opus in a field that also included Vincent in Brixton and Say Goodnight, Gracie. The latter ends its run at the Helen Hayes Theatre Aug. 24. The industry paper also says that Enchanted April — which began its run at the Belasco April 8 — will not have recouped its $2 million capitalization by its closing date. There are, however, plans for the play to be produced at the Pasadena Playhouse in April 2004 for a six-week run. That engagement will begin a resident-theatre tour that is currently being assembled by producer Jeffrey Richards and Pasadena Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps.

The cast of Enchanted April currently includes Jayne Atkinson, Jane Adams, Elizabeth Ashley, Michael Hayden, Michael Cumpsty, Denny Dillon, Dagmara Dominczyk and Daniel Gerroll. Hartford Stage artistic director Michael Wilson directed the work.
