Hawke, who played the title role in a modern-day film adaptation of Hamlet directed by Almereyda in 2000, will also star in "Cymbeline," which will stage Shakespeare's love story against the backdrop of a war between corrupt policemen and drug-dealing bikers.
Deadline.com reports the movie has been described as "Sons of Anarchy" meets "ROMEO + JULIET."
Hawke recently starred in the films "The Purge" and "Before Midnight." His stage work includes The Coast of Utopia, Henry IV and The Seagull. He will star in the upcoming Lincoln Center Theater revival of Macbeth, which begins Broadway previews Oct. 24 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Michael Benaroya will produce "Cymbeline" for Benaroya Pictures, and Benaroya's Ben Sachs is executive producer on the film. Anthony Katagas, who also worked with Hawke and Almereyda on "Hamlet," will produce for Keep Your Head Productions.
