Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire (i.e., knighted), while pianist Imogen Cooper and conductor and choral composer John Rutter were named Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), as was jazz pianist George Shearing.

The Order of the British Empire recognizes distinguished service to the arts and sciences, public services outside the Civil Service and work with charitable and welfare organizations. It was created in 1917 by George V.
