News   Exclusive: O'Neill's Music Theater Conference Will Develop New Musical by Authors of Urinetown
ZM, the latest musical by the team that wrote Urinetown, will be one of three new musicals that will be developed this summer at 38th annual National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT.

There will also be a musical based on Kurt Vonnegut's classic novel, "Slaughterhouse Five," and another set in the midst of the 2011 revolution in Egypt.

Public staged readings at the Conference will be held June 28-29 and July 2 and 4.

"We are thrilled to invite six emerging and established creators to the Conference this summer. First, a musical adaptation of Vonnegut's anti-war novel, then the story of a new generation struggling in the aftermath of the Egyptian Arab Spring revolution, and a musical that capitalizes on the phenomenon of a zombie apocalypse in the midst of America's growing fast food nation," said Paulette Haupt, O'Neill Artistic Director.

Musicals that have been developed at the conference in previous seasons include Avenue Q, The Wild Party, In the Heights and Violet. Casting, directors and creative teams will be announced in May.

The 2015 selections include:

Slaughterhouse Five
By Jed Feuer (Music) & Adele Ahronheim (Book & Lyrics)
"Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time. Ripped from Optometry School and thrown into the Battle of the Bulge, he meets soldiers as alien to him as the inhabitants of the distant planet Tralfamadore, where he finds himself installed in the Earthling wing of their zoo. Bounced back and forth from childhood to old age, from WWII POW camps to marriage and family back home, he struggles to find a way to fight the past, live fully in the present, and find hope for his planet's future. Based on the classic novel by Kurt Vonnegut, which was inspired by his own experiences during World War II as filtered through his quirky humor and theatrical, other‐worldly imagination."

We Live in Cairo

Patrick (Book & Lyrics) & Daniel Lazour (Book & Music)
"Cairo, 2011. A group of students meet in a small flat above Tahrir Square. This is the beginning of Egypt’s greatest revolution. With laptops and cameras, poetry and music, these urban youth inspire millions of Egyptians to take to the streets and overthrow their president, Hosni Mubarak. We Live in Cairo, a new musical by Patrick and Daniel Lazour, follows six revolutionaries who spoke for their people and risked theirlives for a better future."
