Fernandez (Drowsy Chaperone, Swing) will star as eternal bride-to-be Adelaide opposite John Plumpis as her gambling fiancé Nathan Detroit. The classic musical will also feature Robert Mammana as Sky Masterson and Carey Brown as Sarah Brown. Chris Coleman with direct the production with choreography by Joel Farrell. The Frank Leosser musical runs Sept. 23-Oct. 26 on Portland Center Stage's main stage.
The cast of gamblers and their dames includes Todd Hormann (Nicely Nicely Johnson), Wendell Wright (Big Julie), Kent Zimmerman (Harry the Horse), Chrisse Roccaro (General Cartwright), Richard Mathews (Arvide), Scott Coopwood (Lt. Brannigan), William G. Hammonds (Calvin), Christophe Caballero (Rusty Charlie), Amy Palamino (Agatha), Alan Bennett (Angie the Ox), Kristin Smith (Martha), Merrill Wes (Mimi), Cat Widdiefield (Hot Box dancer) and Leif Norby (Benny Southstreet).
The Guys and Dolls creative team includes Skip Mercier (scenic design), Daniel Ordower (lighting design), Casi Pacilio (sound design) and Rick Lewis (musical director).
Guys and Dolls features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser with a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. The popular musical is based on the stories and characters of American chronicler Damon Runyon.
The original Broadway production, starring Robert Alda, Isabel Bigley, Sam Levene and Vivian Blaine, won five Tony Awards and ran for 1,200 performances. Blaine would re-create her role of Miss Adelaide for the film version alongside Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons. The highly successful 1992 Broadway revival starred Nathan Lane, Faith Prince, Peter Gallagher and Josie de Guzman, running 1,143 performances. Guys and Dolls will return to Broadway under the direction of Des McAnuff in spring of 2009.
