Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964 and was the first Broadway musical to surpass 3,000 performances. It tells the story of Tevye, a milkman trying to maintain his Jewish traditions in a small town under the rule of Imperial Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. As his family handles internal disagreements, they face external social pressures culminating in the eviction of Jews by order of the Tsar.
