The Japan Society in NY is hosting an exhibit on Japanese theatre through Feb. 1. The exhibit covers all of Japan's wide-ranging array of theatre, from its 4th-century shamanistic roots to the classics of noh, bunraku (puppet theatre with life-size puppets, which takes its name from the name of the theatre where it has been housed in Japan since 1909) and kabuki. Also included is a section on contemporary drama, which has elements in common with Western "fringe" theatre.
The collection consists of costumes, masks, ukiyo-e prints, props, posters, videos and memorabilia.
The exhibit has been co-organized by the Japan Foundation in collaboration with the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum at Tokyo's Waseda University.
