Classic Arts News Fire Island Dance Festival 13 to Feature Six World Premieres and Whoopi Goldberg Fire Island Dance Festival 13, running this weekend, will feature six world premieries along with emcees Whoopi Goldberg, Michael McElroy and Phylicia Rashad.
Battleworks Dance Company, CorbinDANCES, MOMIX, Tapaholics, Trey McIntyre Project and choreographer Darrel Grand Moultrie will each present a world premiere.

Other performers include Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Chase Brock Experience, Jorge Guzman & Willem De Vries, Pascal Rioult Dance Company and Travis Wall & Ivan Koumaev.

The event benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA), a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and has raised over $1 million since its inception in 1994.

Set against the Great South Bay, performances will take place on an outdoor stage in the Fire Island Pines, a beach community 60 miles west of Manhattan in the town of Brookhaven.

The private deck of a home belonging to Jon Biondo and Tim Horman will be this year's stage. The couple hosted the events last year as well.

Each performance begins with DRA Fanfare, a brass and percussion work Phillip Glass wrote expressly for the festival.

The event has been called "one of the 12 best parties of the year" by The New York Times, an event sponsor, and "summer's hottest charity event" by Out magazine.

DRA-raised funds are distributed to more than 485 national AIDS and family service organizations. Over $100 million have been raised since the organization was founded in 1991 by former Paul Taylor dancers Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez.

Last month, DRA and the Times Square Alliance presented the second Dancing at the Crossroads, a free outdoor concert in Times Square with 30 dance companies and 200-plus dancers.

Former emcees include Alan Cumming, Ana Gasteyer (last's year's festival) and B.D. Wong.

Fire Island Dance Festival 13 opens on Saturday, July 21 with two performances, each emceed by Whoopi Goldberg and accompanied by a party. Michael McElroy and Phylicia Rashad host its closing performance on Sunday, July 22. Tickets start at $100. More information is available at www.dradance.org or by calling 1-212-810-0770.
