News First a Dame, Now a Square!: Dame Edna to Appear on U.S. TV Dame Edna Everage, the wacky, lovable creation of writer-actor Barry Humphries, will be a celebrity guest on TV's "Hollywood Squares" this winter.

Liz Smith reports that over the Jan. 10 weekend, Everage will begin taping two week's worth of episodes for the syndicated game show, which is aired in the New York area on CBS-TV. Everage will have the coveted Center Square position, formerly held by Whoopi Goldberg, who is now in rehearsals for the upcoming revival of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. It's a busy time for Humphries, who is performing his newest show, A Night with Dame Edna: The Family Show, around the country and who can also be seen in the silver-screen adaptation of "Nicholas Nickleby."

Dubbed Australia's First Lady, Dame Edna is the invention of Humphries, a successful character actor in Europe and Australia as well as an esteemed landscape painter. Some of Humphries' theatrical credits include roles in Waiting for Godot, Oliver! and Maggie May, but his most successful outings have been as Dame Edna, a character he created in 1956. Humphries was given the Order of Australia in 1982 and was endowed with an Honorary Doctorate of Griffith University in Australia in 1994.
