The world premiere of Ngozi Anyanwu’s The Homecoming Queen began performances January 10 at Atlantic Theater’s Stage 2. Playwright Mfoniso Udofia (Sojourners and Her Portmanteau) stars as a novelist returning to Nigeria to care for her father. Having been absent for over a decade, the trip forces her to confront a painful past, her culture, and a deep, unexpected love.

Awoye Timpo, associate director of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning revival of Jitney, directs. The run is scheduled through February 11 with a January 22 opening night.

The cast also includes Mirirai Sithole, recently seen Off-Broadway in School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play, Oberon K.A. Adjepong (Uncommon Sense), Segun Akande (Burning Sands), Ebbe Bassey (Saving Father), Vinie Burrows (Good Person of Szechwan), Patrice Johnson (For Colored Girls…), and Zenzi Williams (The Crucible).
