News FL's Gorilla Theatre and Stageworks Team for New Play About Church Bombings BapBomb, a new work "on a Civil Rights theme," gets its world premiere Jan. 11-28 in a Tampa, FL, co-production by Gorilla Theatre and Stageworks.

BapBomb centers around an unlikely cast of characters in a Southern law firm in a time when facts about a Birmingham, AL, church bombing are being reconsidered.

BapBomb is the third Civil Rights play crafted by Tampa playwright Hubert Grissom. After moving to Tampa in 2001, Grissom joined the Stageworks Playwrights' Workshop. His other plays include Wedges, a look at racial tolerance and populism under "Big Jim" Folsom, former Governor of Alabama; and Waterin' Hole, a portrayal of racial justice during a violent railroad strike in the 1950s. He is currently litigation director for the Advocacy Center for Persons with Disabilities, Inc.

BapBomb takes its name from the FBI code name for the 1963 Ku Klux Klan bombing of a Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, that killed four young African-American girls. Set in 1988, "the play looks at a politically connected Birmingham law firm presided over by a larger-than-life senior partner who is concerned about his role in the recently discovered wiretap tapes of the Civil Rights Movement."

A cast of unlikely law firm characters "bring wit and irreverent humor to a time when 'God, Guns & Gays' became the motto of bad politicians, who were creating new scapegoats to fuel hate crimes."

The cast includes Slake Counts, Oliver Dill, Rhonda Eason, Steven Pachosa and Jim Wicker. Stageworks' Anna Brennen directs the production. For reservations or information, call (813) 879-2914 or wwww.gorillatheatre.com.

Gorilla Theatre is at 4419 N. Hubert Ave, Tampa, FL.
