Famed songwriter Alan Menken celebrates his birthday July 22.

Known for his work for film, the prolific writer made his Broadway debut in 1994, creating the music for Disney's Beauty and the Beast. In the three decades since, he has written for stage musicals including The Little Mermaid, Sister Act, Newsies, Aladdin, A Bronx Tale, and more. Menken has been nominated for five Tony Awards, winning in 2012 for Best Original Score for Newsies.

In 2020, Alan Menken scored EGOT status with a win at the Daytime Emmy Awards, becoming the 16th person in history to win a competitive Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. The composer won Outstanding Original Song in a Children’s, Young Adult, or Animated Program alongside lyricist Glenn Slater for "Waiting in the Wings" from Disney Channel's Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.
