News Full Casting Announced for New London Production of Filumena at the Almeida Joining the previously announced Samantha Spiro in the title role of Eduardo de Filippo's Filumena, which begins performances at London's Almeida Theatre March 15 prior to an official opening March 22, will be Geoffrey Freshwater, Victoria Lloyd, Luke Norris, Emily Plumtree, Sheila Reid, Richard Riddell, Brodie Ross, Edmund Wiseman and Clive Wood.

The play, being presented in a new English version by Tanya Ronder, is directed by Almeida artisic director Michael Attenborough, with designs by Robert Jones, lighting by Tim Mitchell and sound by John Leonard.

In the balmy heat of late '40s Naples, Filumena Marturano (Spiro) lies on her deathbed waiting to marry Domenico Soriano (Domenico), the man who has kept her as his mistress for twenty-five years.  But no sooner has the priest completed the ceremony, than Filumena makes a miraculous recovery. As he reels in shock, Domenico discovers that this brilliant, iron-willed woman has a few more surprises for him. 

Freshwater, who plays Alfredo, has been a company member at the Royal Shakespeare Company since 2005 where he has most recently been seen in As You Like It, The Grain Store, King Lear and Antony and Cleopatra.

Lloyd, who plays Lucia/Teresina, last appeared at the Almeida Theatre in Michael Attenborough’s 2009 production of Measure for Measure

Plumtree, who plays Diana, was in the recent RSC productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew.  She was nominated for a 2011 BIFA Raindance Award for playing the lead role in the film "Hollow." Reid, who plays Rosalia, is best known on television for playing Madge in ITV’s award-winning "Benidorm." Her extensive stage credits include working for the RSC, National, Royal Court and Donmar Warehouse.

Riddell, who plays Michele, was in the recent RSC productions of The Merchant of Venice and The Homecoming, and he has also previously appeared at Shakespeare's Globe.

Ross, who plays Umberto, was last seen in Othello at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, where he also appeared in An Enemy of the People.

Spiro, who plays Filumena, was last seen onstage in Company at Sheffield's Crucible. Other recent credits include Chicken Soup with Barley at the Royal Court, Hello Dolly! at the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park (for which she won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical), Twelfth Night for the Donmar Warehouse at Wyndham's, Funny Girl at Chichester's Minerva Theatre, and Two Hundred Years at the National.

Wiseman, who plays Nocella/Waiter, has appeared onstage in Osama the Hero at Hampstead Theatre and Cheek by Jowl's production of Macbeth at the Barbican.

Wood, who plays Domenico, was last seen on the London stage in The Tempest and Flare Path as part of Trevor Nunn's season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.  Other theatre credits include Richard II, Richard III, Hamlet, Nicholas Nickleby and the title role in Henry IV Parts I and II, all for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
