With their wins for Best Book of a Musical (Lisa Kron) and Best Original Score (Jeanine Tesori and Kron), the women marked the first all-female writing team to win a Tony Award for a musical's score.
Upon accepting the Tony Award, Tesori said, "For girls, you have to see it to be it," remarking on the musical's acclaimed song "Ring of Keys," in which the young girl Alison identifies with a butch lesbian she sees in a diner.

Fun Home is inspired by Alison Bechdel's memoir about coming out as a lesbian and the subsequent suicide of her father, a closeted gay man, played by Tony winner Michael Cerveris; it is the first Broadway musical to feature a lesbian as a protagonist.
