News Gallagher, Jr. Leads Spring Awakening Master Class Jan. 21 Tony Award winner John Gallagher, Jr. will spend time with young Broadway hopefuls in the upcoming Spring Awakening-themed Broadway Artists Alliance master class Jan. 21.

Gallagher, who exited the Broadway hit Spring Awakening Dec. 16, will lead the second master class based on the Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater musical. The first Spring Awakening master class – led by cast member Lea Michele – proved so popular that Broadway Artists Alliance has reprised the day-long seminar.

Master class participants will have the opportunity to speak with Gallagher about his career and experiences in Spring Awakening during a Q&A session. Following the discussion, Gallagher is scheduled to lead the group in a song interpretation class where they will work on contemporary audition material.

Kate Schwabe, a representative from Jim Carnahan casting – the agency responsible for finding the young talent who inhabit the Spring Awakening cast – will then provide feedback to the participants during a contemporary musical theatre audition seminar. The young performers will also be coached on cold readings of sides from Steven Sater's Tony-winning book.

Gallagher made his Broadway debut portraying a teenager involved in a tragic car accident in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Rabbit Hole. His return to the Broadway stage in Spring Awakening would earn him a 2007 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the brooding Moritz in the musical based on the expressionistic play by Frank Wedekind. Gallagher currently tours with his band Old Springs Pike.

Previous talents who have lent their time and experience to the program include Sutton Foster, Ashley Brown, Beth Leavel, Jason Robert Brown, Lea Michele, Heather Parcells, Lauren Kennedy, John Lloyd Young, Stephen Schwartz and Lea Salonga. Upcoming master class themes include Wicked (Jan. 19); Little Mermaid (Mar. 24); Hairspray (April 13); Spamalot (May 4); and Young Frankenstein (June 23). The creative participants involved will be announced shortly.

The Broadway Artists Alliance Spring Awakening master class is open to performers ages 10-21. Space is limited – those interested can find further information and applications by visiting www.broadwayartistsalliance.org/masterclasses.
