A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angy Inch also won four prizes, including Best Revival of a Musical. Best Play went to the Lyndon Johnson history play All The Way, and A Raisin in the Sun won three Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play.

Gentleman's Guide, which was inspired by the book "Kind Hearts and Coronets," also took home the Tony for Best Book of a Musical, which went to Robert L. Freedman. In his Broadway directing debut, Darko Tresnjak won Best Director of a Musical for the production, which also won Best Costume Design of a Musical for Linda Cho.

For her performance as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Jessie Mueller won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her parents, who are both actors, as well as King herself. 

Neil Patrick Harris, a frequent Tony host, won Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance in the titular role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In his acceptance speech, Harris said he was initially "terrified" to take on the role. The production also took home the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

Best Revival of a Play went to the Kenny Leon-directed A Raisin in the Sun. Stage and screen star Bryan Cranston won Best Actor in a Play for his performance as President Lyndon B. Johnson in Robert Schenkkan's history play All The Way, which also took home the Tony for Best Play.

Audra McDonald won her record-breaking, sixth competitive Tony Award for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. In an emotional acceptance speech, she thanked her parents for encouraging her to pursue her interests as a child.

Best Choreography Tony went to Warren Carlyle for the critically acclaimed dance-heavy revue After Midnight.

In her Broadway debut, Sophie Okonedo won Best Featured Actress in a Play for A Raisin in the Sun. The British actress began her speech with, "Blimey!"

James Monroe Iglehart won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his charismatic performance as the Genie in Aladdin. In his acceptance speech, he gave a "praise shout" and performed some dance moves at the microphone.

Kenny Leon took home his first Tony for his direction of the revival of A Raisin in the Sun.

Lena Hall won the Tony for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for her performance as Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In an emotional acceptance speech, Hall said, "Friendship is magic."

Mark Rylance, who made history for receiving nominations for Best Leading Actor in a Play and Best Featured Actor in a Play, received the Featured Tony for his performance in Twelfth Night.  

Best Lighting Design of a Musical went to Kevin Adams for the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Natasha Katz's moody, atmospheric lighting for the revival of The Glass Menagerie won Best Lighting Design of a Play.

Best Scenic Design of a Musical went to Christopher Barreca for the stage adpatation of the boxing movie Rocky, and Beowulf Boritt's revolving turntable set for Act One won Best Scenic Design of a Play.

Jason Robert Brown's lush score of The Bridges of Madison County took home Best Orchestrations and Best Score, and Best Sound Design of a Musical went to Brian Ronan for the Carole King tuner Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
