The George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has announced details for its 2019–2020 season, which will inaugurate its new, state-of-the art home, The New Brunswick Performing Center.
Opening the season will be the new musical Last Days of Summer, based on the novel by Steve Kluger about a young boy from Brooklyn who forges a pen-pal friendship with a star player from the New York Giants. Newsies Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun will direct the musical that has a score by Jason Howland (Little Women), and a book by Kluger. Performances run October 15–November 11. Last Days of Summer is produced in association with Daryl Roth.
Renée Taylor’s My Life on a Diet, which was seen Off-Broadway last summer, will follow from November 19–December 15.
The world-premiere thriller Midwives, based on the novel-turned-film by Chris Bohjalian, will launch the new year January 21–February 16, 2020. Bohjalian adapts his courtroom-set drama about the trial that ensues following an impossible decision made by midwife Sibyl Danforth during a routine at-home birth. Tony nominee Sheryl Kaller will direct.
Tony Award-winning Memphis writer Joe DiPietro will see the world premiere of his latest play Conscience presented March 3–29. Set during the American Red Scare, the historical drama centers on Congresswoman and Senator Margaret Chase Smith, who took the Senate floor in 1950 to denounce the political actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy. George Street Playhouse Artistic Director David Saint will direct.
The season will close with a new musical based on the Pamela Gray film A Walk on the Moon, featuring music and lyrics by Paul Scott Goodman (Bright Lights Big City). Kaller will direct the musical about a young married woman who discovers her own independence while at a Catskills summer resort in 1969. Performances run April 21–May 17.
