GLAAD, the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy organization, presents the Vito Russo Award to "an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality."

The evening will also feature a performance by pop star Kylie Minogue.

It was previously reported that for the first time in over 19 years, GLAAD will not bestow awards in the categories of Outstanding New York Theater – Broadway & Off-Broadway or Outstanding New York Theater – Off-Off Broadway. The category of Outstanding Los Angeles Theater has also been dropped.

The eliminations follow a strong year for powerful LGBT theatre on the New York stage, which boasted such works as the inclusive Tony-winning musical Kinky Boots; Douglas Carter Beane's historical gay Broadway outing The Nance, starring Nathan Lane; the landmark Off-Broadway musical Fun Home, based on the graphic memoir of lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel; the Billie Jean King drama She Is King; Jonathan Tolins' Buyer and Cellar; the LCT3 premiere of A Kid Like Jake; and the Off-Broadway return of the coming-of-age rock musical Bare.

Representatives for the organization stated that the categories were eliminated due to a smaller staff working on the awards and the organization's LGBT advocacy work. The organization continues to host LGBT-friendly theatre listings on its website. Productions that have earned GLAAD's theatrical honors in the past have included Rent (1997); Love! Valour! Compassion! (1995); Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde (1998); The Invention of Love (2002); I Am My Own Wife (2004); The Normal Heart (2005); The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? (2003); Corpus Christie (2003); Zanna, Don't! (2003); The Little Dog Laughed (2007); A Boy and His Soul (2010); The Pride (2011); The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide (2012); Southern Comfort (2012) and Bring It On (2013).

The 25th annual GLAAD nominees were published, released or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2013, and Dec. 31, 2013.

"Since its inception 25 years ago, the GLAAD Media Awards have reshaped the news and entertainment industries, inspiring thoughtful and inclusive characters and plotlines that have driven equality forward," said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement. "This year has brought momentous progress for LGBT people and families - and our nominees have created images and stories that continue to challenge misconceptions, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts and minds of millions all across the globe."
