News Gershwin Theatre to House Opera Versus Musical Theatre Discussion with Composer Schwartz In conjunction with the spring 2011 New York City debut of his opera Séance on a Wet Afternoon, composer Stephen Schwartz will take part in a roundtable discussion held at the Gershwin Theatre, home of his international hit musical Wicked.

Entitled "Opera or Musical Theater?," the April 10, 2011, discussion will begin at 7:30 PM.

"A panel of distinguished composers and playwrights join Stephen Schwartz for an in-depth look at what defines the opera and musical theater genres," according to press notes.

Additional participants will be announced at a later date.

Séance on a Wet Afternoon, which premiered at Opera Santa Barbara in September 2009, will make its New York debut April 19, 2011, at 7:30 PM at New York City Opera. The composer's son, director Scott Schwartz (Golda's Balcony, Jane Eyre, Rooms), will again direct the production, which will run through May 1, 2011.

Stephen Schwartz, a five-time Tony nominee for the scores of Pippin, Godspell, Working, Wicked and his lyrics for Rags, has earned Academy Awards for "Pocahontas" and "The Prince of Egypt." He also earned three Academy Award nominations for his work on "Enchanted." Schwartz also received Grammy Awards for the recordings of Wicked, Godspell and "Pocahontas."
