New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will be at the Van Alen Institute in Manhattan Feb. 15 to announce the design winners in the international competition to re-make the Theatre Development Fund's (TDF) TKTS discount ticket booth.
TKTS is located just north of Times Square, on Duffy Square, which is a state park. The TKTS booth is a venerable theatre landmark that has sold discount tickets for the past 26 years. Today, TKTS is reported to sell up to $1.7 million in discount tickets annually.
TDF helped establish TKTS booths in Boston (BOSTIX), then in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, London and Sydney.
The international design competition to redesign TKTS resulted in 682 entries coming in from 31 countries a TDF spokesperson told Playbill On Line. A jury comprising civic leaders, as well as theatre, architectural and design professionals voted on the winning design.
The competition was run entirely by architecture's Van Alen Institute. Van Alen can be reached at (212) 924-7000 (ext. 18) or by visiting www.vanalen.org. -- By Murdoch McBride
