Marrazzo's rise at the company has been swift: he joined Glimmerglass as Director of Public Relations last year and was named to the interim artistic operations post in September, upon the departure of Nicholas G. Russell.
Before coming to Glimmerglass, Marrazzo worked at the New York City public relations firm KKN Enterprises, which specializes in classical music. He has a bachelor's degree in vocal performance from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and a Master of Music degree from the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam.
The Glimmerglass Opera, a summer-season company located in Cooperstown, New York, has developed an enviable reputation in recent years for innovative and compelling productions of interesting repertoire. But the company is at something of a crossroads, having lost five top executives in the space of two years. Glimmerglass general director Joanne Cossa departed in 2004 (after 18 months in the job); longtime artistic director Paul Kellogg (who is general and artistic director at New York City Opera) retired at the end of this season; music director and chief conductor Stewart Robertson stepped down in 2006 as well, as did Russell and director of administrations and operations Jeryl Dropp. Michael McLeod has replaced both Cossa and Kellogg, serving as general and artistic director; both Marrazzo and Andrea Lyons (replacing Dropp) took up their jobs this fall; no chief conductor has yet been appointed.
The 2007 season at Glimmerglass Opera will offer five works based on the Orpheus myth: four in new stagings — Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, Berlioz's arrangement of Gluck's Orph_e et Eurydice, Offenbach's Orph_e aux enfers ("Orpheus in Hell") and Philip Glass's Orph_e — and two concert performances of Haydn's L'anima del filosofo.
