CosÐ fan tutte is directed by Tom Albery, in a co-production with the UK's Opera North and New York City Opera. The cast includes baritone Sanford Sylvan as Alfonso; soprano Anne-Sophie Duprels makes her Glimmerglass debut as Fiordiligi.
Other highlights of the season include a production of the rarely heard French revision of Lucia di Lammermoor, opening tomorrow night.
Lucie de Lammermoor premiered in Paris in 1839, four years after the debut of Donizetti's original Italian version. In revising the opera, Donizetti eliminated one character, added another, and inserted an aria from his 1834 Rosmonda d'Inghilterra. It has not been heard in the United States in nearly a century.
Glimmerglass's version, directed by Lillian Groag and conducted by Beatrice Jona Affron, will star soprano Sarah Coburn with tenor Ra‹l Hernšndez, baritone Earle Patriarco, and bass-baritone Craig Phillips.
Also on the schedule is a double bill of Massenet's Le Portrait de Manon (another rarity) and Poulenc's La Voix Humaine, starring soprano Amy Burton.
Finally, the company presents a new production of Britten's Death in Venice, another co-production with New York City Opera. Tazewell Thompson, who staged Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites for the two companies recently, is the director. Tenor William Burden plays Aschenbach.
