Miranda Haymon directs the Roundabout Underground production about six students stuck in detention.

The world premiere of Exception to the Rule by Dave Harris officially opened May 18 at Roundabout Underground's Black Box Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. Previews for the limited engagement, set to run through June 26, began April 28. Roundabout Resident Director Miranda Haymon helms the production.

The play centers on six Black students stuck together, fighting and flirting their way through detention at the worst school in the city. The ensemble cast includes MaYaa Boateng, Malik Childs, Mister Fitzgerald, Toney Goins, Amandla Jahava, and Claudia Logan.

Exception to the Rule features sets by Reid Thompson and Kamil James, costumes by Sarita Fellows, lighting by Cha See, and sound by Lee Kinney.

Harris was Roundabout’s 2020–21 Tow Foundation Playwright in Residence. His play Tambo & Bones ran earlier this season at Playwrights Horizons and makes its West Coast premiere at Center Theatre Group.
