The new adaptation will join a collection being assembled by Hogarth Worldwide Publishing in an attempt to present Shakespeare in a more modern and accessible format. "Hamlet has long been a fascination of mine: murder, betrayal, revenge, deceit, madness — all my favorite things," Flynn said in a statement. "Add to that some of Shakespeare's most intriguing, curious characters — from the titular brooding prince to rueful Ophelia — and what (slightly cheeky) writer wouldn't be tempted to reimagine it?"

"Gone Girl," a crime thriller, was a bestseller in both hardcover and paperback formats. A film adaptation, starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Emily Ratajkowski and Sela Ward, will be released in October.

Additional authors who will contribute to the collection include Margaret Atwood, who will write a version of The Tempest; Tracy Chevalier, who will pen a take on Othello; Howard Jacobson, who is behind The Merchant of Venice; Jo Nesbo, who will write a rendition of Macbeth; Anne Tyler, who is penning a Taming of the Shrew; and Jeanette Winterson, who will offer a Winter's Tale.
