Rannells, who has been shuttling back and forth between coasts doing TV ("Girls"), film ("The Intern") and Broadway projects, is filling in for Jonathan Groff, who is taking a pre-arranged one-month leave to appear in the HBO film "Looking," which will serve as the finale to the San Francisco-set series. Groff is scheduled to return Dec. 1.

George III is a comic-relief role in Hamilton, appearing from time to time to snark at the troubles of the American "rebels." The role was created Off-Broadway by Brian d'Arcy James.

Rannells' most recent Broadway appearance was in the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch for seven weeks in 2014.
