Grammy-nominated salsa music star Tito Nieves is set to star in the world premiere of the new musical I Like It Like That - A Musical, which tells the story of the Rodríguez family living in New York City’s East Harlem in the early 1970s. The new work is billed as a “historical musical journey” through a period when music was the soul of El Barrio.
Performances will begin September 7 at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, with an official opening scheduled for September 22.
The new musical is written by David Maldonado and Waddys Jáquez, with direction by Jáquez. As well as original songs, the work features Latin classics of the era by Ruben Blades, Hector Casanova, Willie Colón, Pete El Conde, Joe Cuba and more. Desmar Guevara is music supervisor.
Nieves will star as Roberto Rodríguez, the patriarch of the family. He is joined by a cast made up of Rossmery Almonte, Caridad De La Luz, Chachi Del Valle, Shadia Fairuz, Quique González, Ana Isabelle, Sofia Klimovsky, Angel López, Yesenia Santiago and Gilbert Velázquez.
The band includes Bobby Allende (percussion), Anthony Carrillo (percussion), Jorge Castro (saxophone), Guido Gonzalez (trumpet), Guevara (musical director/keyboards), Jerry Madera (bass) and Hommy Ramos (trombone).
I Like It Like That’s creative team includes Raul Abrego (scenic designer), Lucrecia Briceño and Benjamin Swope (lighting), Julian Evans (sound), Rocco Disanti (projection), Hochi Asiatico (costume), Charles Bowden (props), Rosalba Rolón (dramatist) and Jonathan Maldonado and Grisel Del Valle (associate choreographers).
I Like It Like That is produced by David Maldonado, David Rodriguez and Juan Toro, co-produced by Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, and executive-produced by Cardenas Marketing Network (CMN).
